Neck and shoulder pain are among the most common complaints related to musculoskeletal issues. Whether from sitting hunched over a computer for hours, lifting heavy objects, or even just from stress, these aches and pains can significantly impact our daily lives. In fact, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study, neck pain is the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide, making it a common issue many people grapple with.

Chiropractors play a critical role in addressing these discomforts. They specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, often using manual adjustment techniques to realign the body and promote healing. Their holistic approach not only alleviates pain but also enhances overall well-being. This blog post will delve into an in-depth guide on chiropractic solutions for neck and shoulder pain, providing valuable insights into how these professionals can help you lead a more comfortable, pain-free life.

Understanding Neck and Shoulder Pain

The neck and shoulder region is a complex network of bones, muscles, and nerves. The neck, or cervical spine, comprises seven small vertebrae and supports the total weight of your head. It’s incredibly flexible, allowing the head to move in nearly every direction. The shoulder, on the other hand, is the most mobile joint in the body. It’s composed of three main bones: the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone), all working together to enable a wide range of movement.

However, this flexibility and mobility have a downside: vulnerability to injury and pain. Discomfort in these areas can stem from various sources, including physical injury, disease, and lifestyle factors. Common causes include poor posture, repetitive stress injuries, and muscular imbalances. Let’s investigate these causes to understand how they contribute to neck and shoulder pain.

Poor Posture

Poor posture is one of the leading contributors to neck and shoulder pain. When we slouch or hunch over, it strains the muscles and ligaments in our neck and shoulders. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain and even long-term damage.

Repetitive Stress Injuries

Repetitive stress injuries occur when we repeatedly perform the same motions, causing wear and tear on our muscles and joints. It is common in jobs that require constant typing or manual labor. These injuries can result in persistent neck and shoulder discomfort if not properly managed.

Muscular Imbalances

Muscular imbalances refer to uneven strength or flexibility between opposing muscle groups. For instance, if your chest muscles are stronger than your back muscles, it can pull your shoulders forward, causing discomfort. Addressing these imbalances through targeted exercises can help alleviate neck and shoulder pain.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care provides a unique, holistic approach to pain management. Chiropractic care often provides long-lasting relief by focusing on the root cause of discomfort instead of just treating symptoms. This method considers various health factors, including lifestyle choices, environment, and genetics. The goal is to maintain optimal health naturally to help the body resist disease. It comprehensively views the human body as an interconnected and interdependent system.

In addition to the holistic approach, chiropractic care utilizes non-invasive techniques for pain relief. These include spinal adjustments, soft tissue manipulation, and therapeutic exercises. Each technique is designed to restore function, improve mobility, and alleviate pain without using drugs or surgery. They offer a safer alternative for people who prefer natural, drug-free treatments. Plus, these techniques can be customized to each person’s unique needs, offering personalized care.

How Chiropractors Assess Pain

Assessing pain in chiropractic care begins with an initial consultation and examination. The chiropractor will ask about your medical history, lifestyle, and current symptoms during this session. This information is crucial to understand the context of your pain and provide an accurate diagnosis. The chiropractor will also perform a physical exam to assess your posture, spinal alignment, and mobility.

Following the initial consultation, chiropractors use various diagnostic tools to identify the source of your pain. These may include X-rays, MRI scans, and a range of motion tests. These tools provide detailed images of your spine and joints, helping the chiropractor identify any structural issues causing your pain. Range of motion tests, on the other hand, measure your flexibility and mobility, providing additional insights into your condition.

Tailored Treatment Plans

Once they’ve assessed your pain, chiropractors develop tailored treatment plans based on their findings. This personalized approach ensures that every patient receives the most effective care. Adjustments aim to realign the spine, improve nerve function, and relieve pain and discomfort. This personalized approach ensures you receive the most effective care for your needs.

In addition to personalized adjustments, chiropractors may use integrative therapies for a more comprehensive treatment. These could include acupuncture, massage therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Acupuncture can help manage pain and promote healing, while massage therapy can relieve muscle tension and improve circulation. Lifestyle modifications, such as changes in diet or exercise habits, can further enhance your health and well-being.

Chiropractic Techniques for Neck Pain

When it comes to neck pain, chiropractors often perform cervical adjustments. These involve gentle manipulations of the neck region to restore alignment and reduce pain. Cervical adjustments can alleviate tension, improve mobility, and enhance overall neck function. They’re a safe and effective way to address neck pain.

Chiropractors also recommend mobilization exercises to improve flexibility in the neck. These exercises, including neck stretches and strengthening routines, can help maintain a healthy range of motion. Regularly performing these exercises can strengthen neck muscles and prevent future pain or injury. It’s a proactive approach to maintaining neck health.

Chiropractic Techniques for Shoulder Pain

For shoulder pain, chiropractors may perform adjustments on the glenohumeral joint. This ball-and-socket joint allows for a wide range of motion in the shoulder. Adjustments can correct any misalignments, reduce pain, and restore function. It’s a targeted approach to addressing shoulder pain.

Finally, chiropractors often recommend rotator cuff exercises to improve shoulder stability. These exercises, including stretches and strengthening routines, work to enhance the strength and flexibility of the rotator cuff muscles. Patients can achieve better shoulder stability and decrease their risk of future shoulder issues by improving these factors.

Summary: Embracing a Pain-Free Life

Chiropractic care offers a practical and holistic approach to managing neck and shoulder pain. With a focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of discomfort rather than just treating symptoms, it presents a viable solution for long-term pain relief. Personalized treatment plans allow for targeted and efficient care, improving overall well-being.

Seeking professional help for persistent pain is crucial for maintaining health and quality of life. Chiropractic solutions aim to alleviate immediate pain and prevent future occurrences through comprehensive care strategies. It is a worthwhile consideration for anyone experiencing ongoing neck or shoulder pain.

We get it. You pay a lot of money for your health insurance, and you want to use your benefits. Here are 3 important things to know before you decide who to trust with your health.

1. Health insurance companies do not care about your health.

This may be difficult to absorb, but unfortunately it’s true. Health insurance companies care about saving money and cutting costs. They put limits on treatment options, and put arbitrary road blocks in place to deny care and save a buck. This is a big problem when you have a health issue you are expecting to be covered.

2. Health insurance companies continue to undercut their doctors.

Would you show up to work tomorrow if your boss told you they were getting a 20% pay cut? The obvious answer is NO. Every year doctors continue to get reimbursed less from insurance companies. The best doctors are leaving the insurance networks everyday, meaning they are “out of network” providers. Good doctors providing a valuable service no longer see a need to be involved with insurance networks. The doctors that stick around in the insurance networks are the ones willing to be paid less to do the job. In the near future, only mediocre doctors will still be “In Network” providers. The best doctors in the world will get away from working with insurances altogether, while continuing to provide massive value to their patients.

3. The cost of healthcare continues to go up for patients.

Every year, having a health insurance plan gets more expensive. The plans cover less, the monthly premiums are going up, and deductibles continue to rise. Nowadays, most people typically have to pay thousands of dollars before health insurance will cover any portion of care. Does it make sense that you have to pay more, get less coverage for your health needs, and your doctors get paid less also? It’s easy to see who is actually benefiting from this current model.

Here’s the truth:

It’s easy to find doctors who will take your insurance. It’s very difficult to find doctors who can fix your pain and injuries.

We encourage people to spend considerable time researching doctors that are skilled and specialized, instead of simply finding someone who takes their insurance. At the end of the day, there is nothing more expensive than treatment that doesn’t fix your problem. The cheaper solution is never the better solution when it comes to your health. Take the time to find a great doctor.

Our doctors at Apollo Soft Tissue and Spine are soft tissue specialists and experts with biomechanics. In fact, Dr. Drew Ruebbelke and Dr. John Appleman are 2 of only 3 doctors in Denver certified to fix muscle adhesion and nerve entrapments.

We deliver a complete and accurate diagnosis better than anyone else. This means better results and a happier life for you. At Apollo, we care about your health. If you or anyone your know is struggling with pain or nagging injuries, we would be happy to help.

Auto accidents are physically, mentally, and emotionally damaging. You are extremely lucky if you walk away with no major injuries. Physically, auto accidents can wreak havoc on your musculoskeletal (muscles, nerves, and joints) system. Even if you feel okay after the accident, you should get evaluated by a doctor within a few weeks. Pain can often take several days, or even weeks to begin after an auto accident.

Car accidents can damage and overload the muscles, nerves, and joints of your spine. This can lead to a plethora of problems down the road, including scar tissue, early arthritis of your joints, chronic headaches, chronic pain, etc.

Sometimes the damage from an auto accident cannot be reversed. The only way to tell is for an expert to take a look earlier, rather than later. This will allow for a better, faster recovery, not to mention clarity and peace of mind.

Fortunately, seeing an expert to diagnose and treat any problem that may have developed from the accident can help slow down wear and tear processes in your joints, as well as resolve pain. Seeing a highly trained soft tissue specialist is the safest route to healing after an auto accident(even a light fender bender).

At Apollo Soft Tissue and Spine, our soft tissue specialists are chiropractors, and experts with diagnosis and treatment of muscle, nerve, and joint problems. We see people who have been in auto accidents all the time, and are dedicated to helping our patients live pain free. If you or anyone you know is suffering from pain or injury due to an auto accident, we can help.

Let’s face it, pain and injuries from playing sports or living an active life are inevitable. So how do you fix your pain and injuries for good, and continue the activities you love?

The first step is to pay close attention to how long you have been feeling symptoms after the injury. This provides insight into how much better your injury will get on its own, or if you will need expert help. If after a couple days you don’t feel better, it’s time to see someone.

The longer your symptoms stick around, the less likely it is that your injury will fully heal on its own. If left untreated, nagging injuries can continue to get worse, and lead to chronic (long standing) problems. This is a big problem because chronic muscle, nerve, and joint issues put you on the fast track to early arthritis and degeneration.

So if it’s time to see someone, who do you look to for help?

Your first step is to search for a conservative care provider. Someone who can provide safe, effective, and lasting treatments with very little side effects. Conservative care providers most commonly include chiropractors and physical therapists. Even more specifically, find a musculoskeletal expert trained in biomechanics and human movement. These doctors are the most certified to handle muscle, nerve, and joint problems. Integrative Diagnosis providers in your town are the most qualified to help with your pain and sports injury.

Injuries are predictable, preventable, and identifiable by measuring your flexibility and strength. Seeing a doctor certified to do this is imperative for your recovery. If you feel any symptoms (tightness or tension, weakness, burning, tingling, numbness, shooting pain, sharp pain, aches) it is past the point where you can fix the injury on your own.

Once an injury happens, the likelihood of re-injury goes up substantially. If left untreated, your problem will only get worse over time. If not taken seriously, invasive surgeries could end up being the only option for you. Surgeries have more risks and should be avoided if possible. The earlier you get your injuries looked at, the better the chances of the problem being fixed.

At Apollo Soft Tissue and Spine, our chiropractors are soft tissue specialists and biomechanics experts. We diagnose and effectively treat complex, difficult problems other doctors and therapists can’t resolve. Our doctors are 2 of only 3 Integrative Diagnosis providers in Denver certified to fix your pain and injuries. We are here to help when you need it.

For results with your pain and injuries, call the Apollo soft tissue specialists today at (720) 795-4873.

Why do you feel pain? This is a common question we can get in the office, and a good one.

Our bodies are intelligent. Pain is our body’s warning system, and it is an indicator of inflammation and damage. Pain shows up to prevent us from ignoring the problem any longer.

Importantly, pain also serves to unload, or take pressure off the damaged area, so that we don’t make any bad choices that could further damage the underlying problem.

Often times, pain is confusing, because it isn’t specific. It doesn’t tell us exactly WHAT the problem is, and it doesn’t tell us exactly W

HERE the problem is.

This is very similar to the check engine light on the dashboard of your car. When the light comes on, you know there’s a problem. But you don’t know what or where the problem is. We all understand that in order to have the problem resolved, we have to take our car to a mechanic.

What happens if you don’t? What happens if you continue to drive your car and ignore the check engine light? You will damage your car! This means more money out of your pocket, bigger problems down the road, and your car simply won’t last as long.

This is the same for your body. Pushing past pain, or ignoring it will certainly lead to more pain, and irreversible damage to you

r joints, muscles, and nerves. This puts your body on the fast track to wearing out.

And trust us when we say, surgeons waiting rooms are filled with people who didn’t take their pain and injury seriously.

Fixing your problem now means bet

ter, faster results, more money in your pocket, and longevity for you.

Between your car and your body, which one has to last your entire life?

If you, or anyone you know is dealing with pain and injury, or has seen trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors, or other manual therapists with little relief, it’s time to give us a call.
The doctors at Apollo have more training accurately diagnosing and fixing muscle, nerve, and joint problems than any other healthcare facility in the state of Colorado.

Yours in Health,

Chronic Low back or Neck pain

If you’re reading this, you most likely suffer from some sort of chronic low back or neck pain. Ask yourself these following questions to help solve the problem:

Is your pain worse in the morning?

Does the pain get better after waking up and moving around?

Have you had multiple or previous episodes of moderate to severe pain?

Does the pain usually last 2-10 days before going away?

Trouble sitting or standing prolonged periods of time?

Are movements “guarded/protected” or noticing decreased range of motion?

If you answered “yes” to a majority or all of these questions, you most likely are suffering from a disc injury whether you have been diagnosed with it or not. Internal Disc Derangement (IDD) accounts for upwards of 40% of all low back pain and the majority of neck pain!

Disc injuries are often made worse by the presence of adhesion. Adhesion is the most common cause of pain and decreased range of motion in the body. Adhesion acts like glue in muscles and restricts movement. Restricted motion causes more load on injured discs, leading to more pain and long term problems such as disc bulging or disc herniation.

The good news is that a large majority of disc injuries do not require surgery if you seek out an expert to help restore full range of motion and take pressure off of the disc. Disc injuries respond well to conservative management and treatment. By fixing and removing adhesion, range of motion is restored and discs are essentially “decompressed” and unloaded. Leaving you with little to no pain and able to return to regular, daily activity.

We are 2 of only 3 providers in the Denver Metro Area certified to provide you with a proper diagnosis and provide the treatment your neck or back problem needs, even if other practitioners have missed it. Our treatment has helped many people looking for answers to their pain. We have helped patients prevent surgery and those still suffering with pain after surgery. If you answered “yes” to most or all of the questions above, chances are we can help! Call Apollo today at 720-593-2047.

Rotator cuff injuries are common but not normal. Let’s understand which muscles makeup the rotator cuff and how they contribute to your pain. The rotator cuff is made up of 4 muscles, which are more specifically known as the Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, and Subscapularis. These muscles work together to stabilize the shoulder, which is arguably the most unstable joint of the body.

As long as these muscles are relatively strong and healthy, they act in conjunction to balance the movements of the shoulder and our shoulder works perfectly. This allows us to do all the things we take for granted such as: drive our car, open and close doors, blow dry our hair, get dressed, etc.

When these muscles become damaged through trauma, overuse or simply from being alive for more than 20 years they develop muscle adhesion. Muscle adhesion (scar tissue) disrupts the balance between the rotator cuff muscles compromising stability of the shoulder and we experience pain, crunching or popping noises in the shoulder when performing everyday tasks. The muscles, once injured, are past the point where trying to fix it yourself will work. Furthermore, if left untreated, this scar tissue leads to increased wear and tear on the cartilage, ligaments, tendons and attachments of these rotator cuff muscles. The result? Degeneration, arthritis, damaged cartilage, torn rotator cuff tendons and increased pain.

You maybe wondering if you have muscle adhesion, here are a few indicators. If you have: limited mobility, function and pain when using the shoulder or have been diagnosed with degeneration, arthritis, damaged cartilage or a torn rotator cuff? Then you likely have muscle adhesion in your rotator cuff muscles and it is contributing to your shoulder pain.

Drs. John Appleman and Drew Ruebbelke are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of muscle adhesion. They are 2 of 3 doctors certified in the Denver Metro Area to properly diagnose and treat shoulder problems. If you or someone you know is suffering from shoulder pain and other treatments have failed to provide lasting results then call us at 720.593.2047 or visit Apollosofttissue.com to schedule an appointment.

There are over 100 places in the human body where a nerve can become trapped causing symptoms of numbness, tingling, aching, burning and pain. The symptoms result from increased tension on nerves. Nerves transmit information from the environment to the spinal cord and brain. There are many places in the body where nerves are adjacent to, and must slide through muscles.

Nerves need to be able to slide past and through different structures otherwise they will not be able to function properly. Muscles can develop adhesion; if the adhesion builds near a nerve, the two structures can become adhered together stretching the nerve causing problems. The stretching and increased tension injures the nerve and usually causes tingling down either the leg or arm.

It is important to receive an accurate diagnosis so that effective treatment can be provided. If it’s treatable, our treatment fixes nerve entrapments, helps restore proper nerve function, and reduces pain.

If you or someone you know is suffering with nerve pain, restricted ranges of motion, and other treatments have failed to provide lasting results then they need to see Drs. Drew Ruebbelke and John Appleman of Apollo Soft Tissue & Spine.

Remember the days when you didn’t have tight hamstrings or maybe you’ve had them your whole life?

One of the most common statements we hear from patients in our clinic is: “My hamstrings are really tight, I haven’t been stretching much lately, I think that’s why they’re so tight.” Contrary to popular belief, hamstring tightness is not because you don’t stretch enough or haven’t been sticking to your stretching routine. Stretching can actually cause the issue to get worse. Tightness in muscles is to protect a problem that is overloading a damaged tissue or injured joint in the body. Below are the most common reasons for hamstrings feeling “tight.”

Muscle Adhesion in the Hamstrings/ hips/ Adductors: Adhesion is the most common condition of the body, and it acts like glue in these areas. This increases pressure and stress in the hips, low back, and hamstrings, which in turn decreases your range of motion. With movement being reduced, the joints are more prone to injury in the future such as cartilage damage, disc injury, and further degeneration. The hamstrings help in protecting these joints by engaging earlier and reducing range of motion.

Nerve Entrapment of the Sciatic Nerve: Nerve entrapment is extremely common, especially around the sciatic nerve. The nerve has to glide and slide between, through and alongside other tissues from the low back to the foot. Overuse can cause adhesion to form, an glue the nerve to other structures irritating the nerve and causing it to be unhealthy. When the nerve can’t fully glide and slide past tissues, it will contract the hamstrings sooner and cause tightness. Another common symptom of Sciatic nerve entrapment is weak hamstrings.

Disc Injury: When a disc is injured, any bending of the lower back and flexion of the hips places more pressure and stress on the injured disc. If you do have an injured disc and you bend forward the hamstrings will contract to protect your disc so that it doesn’t experience an increase in load or pressure to the damaged area (disc).

If these dysfunctions persist and aren’t fully corrected, your range of motion will decrease, the hamstrings will remain tight, pain will increase, athletic performance will decrease, and degeneration in the joints will accelerate. This is why stretching isn’t helping your tight hamstrings, stretching doesn’t get rid of adhesion, it doesn’t fix your disc injury and it makes trapped nerves worse. So it is imperative that you receive an expert diagnosis and treatment for your condition.
Free Yourself From Pain and Show Your Body Some Gratitude!
